Windsor itself is a pretty town full of traditional shops and historic pubs. Shakespeare is said to have written his play The Merry Wives of Windsor in one of them!. We head to the most famous prehistoric monument in the world, Stonehenge. Now a world heritage site; it’s stands alone in the vast empty tract of Salisbury plain and its origins date back nearly 5,000 years and it has been home to pagan religion and spiritual workship. Our final stop is Bath, another world heritage site. Bath is a beautiful Georgian city with delightful crescents, terraces and architecture. After breakfast inside the hotel, meet and greet you guide at the lobby and depart to Veria. You will visit the ancient synagogue where we will see the Byzantine Mosaic in the monument commemorating his preaching. According to tradition it was at this place where St. Paul preached. Continue to Thessaloniki, after lunch you will see the White Tower, (the symbol of the city), the Church of St. Dimitrios, Arc of Galerius, Rotunda, Upper City, Citadel, Byzantine Wall, Roman Agora. This full day tour is a combination of 2 tours: Vatican and Imperial Rome. The tour begins by coach passing through Piazza della Repubblica with the Fountain of the Nayads and following the ancient Aurelian walls which once surrounded the ancient city. From Piazza del Popolo where you will see an Egyptian obelisk dating back to the time of Ramses II. Finally, on arrival at the Vatican Walls, your guide will then lead you into the Vatican Museum taking the beautiful Spiral staircase and continuing through the Gallery of the Tapestries and the Gallery of the Geographical Maps before arriving in the famous Sistine Chapel with its magnificent fresco of the Last Judgement by Michelangelo, at the end of the tour time free to visit the St. Peter’s Basilica. Lunch at local restaurant. Arriving by coach at Piazza Venezia you then continue on foot to the famous Piazza Del Campidoglio designed by Michelangelo from where you will have a fantastic view of the Roman Forum. Leaving Rome in a northerly direction and crossing the green valley of the Tiber, you pass the slopes of the Apennines covered with olive groves and vineyards to reach the famous valley of Chianti, before finally arriving in Florence built on the banks of the river Arno. The city tour will start with a visit to the Academy Museum where you will see the magnificent David by Michelangelo before continuing on foot with your local guide to see the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with its beautiful dome by Brunelleschi. Other treasures, the Baptistry and Giotto’s Bell Tower can also be admired before reaching Piazza della Signoria, the heart of Florence. Your included lunch will be served in a typical Florentine restaurant before resuming your walk in the afternoon and making you way to Piazza Santa Croce where the church of the same name is situated and where great artists like Michelangelo are buried. You will have the opportunity to visit a leather shop in order to admire one of the typical crafts of the city, and here you will also have some free time to see the work of local goldsmiths and other traditional craftsmen. Leaving Rome in a northerly direction, driving along the Tiber Valley, we reach Orivieto a small town of Etruscan origins where we stop to admire the magnificent 14th century cathedral, a masterpiece of gothic architecture. The tour continues through the green Tuscan Hills covered in olive groves and vineyards. This is the land of some of Italy’s best known D.O.C. (quality controlled) wines, which include Orvieto, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. Lunch too will be of traditional local dishes. In the early afternoon, having driven along the shores of Lake Trasimeno, we reach Assisi, built at the foot of Mount Subasio. Here, during a guided stroll through the lanes of this historic town, you will see the Church of St. Claire, St. Francis’ birthplace, his childhood home, Town hall Square with its People’s Palace, Roman Temple dedicated to Minerva and of course the Town hall itself. Visit St. Francis’ Basilica, close to the ancient city walls, with its magnificent frescoes painted between the 12th and 14th centuries. Leaving Assisi, we stop at the town of Santa Maria degli Angeli named after its church inside which, in the Chapel of Porziuncola, St. Francis died in 1226. You will see all Amsterdam has to offer, from the historical monuments in the centre to the modern architecture of the 21st century. A picture stop at a windmill at the river Amstel and a visit to a diamond factory are included. We will also take you to the former Island of Marken. In this village you will visit a clogmaker and explore this traditional Dutch village. Besides Marken we will also visit Volendam, where there is time for the Cheesefactory and for lunch or shopping. Another part of the tour is the windmill village ‘de Zaanse Schans’, with its characteristic green wooden houses. On the turn of the 18th century this district was an industrial area with approximately 700 windmills in use. In this day and age there are only five left. In summer season the boat trip between Volendam and Marken on the “Marken Express” is included in the price. Transfer back to hotel from the departure point is on pax account.
